I personally like this quote because I think it represents the citizens of Panem. Katniss states that she was told that her mother was once very beautiful. Living in District 12 has changed her appearance, as well as mourning for her husband. The second sentence, “Or so they tell me.” makes me think that Katniss doesn’t really believe them. Do such bad things happen that they are almost unbelievable? Just goes to show you what the Hunger Games is really about: the citizens of Panem, or at least most of them, suffer under the rule of their cruel government, whether it’s hunger or a loss (from the Hunger Games, or an “accident”). What may seem like a simple quote can really mean a lot.
Katniss reminds us that today is Reaping day, where a lot will be waiting for her. This quote is significant because it marks the start, nothing would have happened without the Reaping day.
